Between the year 1930 and the day of his assassination in 1961, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, also known as “El Chivo,” turned the Dominican Republic into a dictatorship filled with abuses. Planned murders from positions of power, gender violence, artistic and sporting spectacles, and absolute control of the media were the tools implemented by one of the most grotesque tyrants of the 20th century to control the people. Only a few brave individuals risked their lives to confront him. Minerva Mirabal, nicknamed “La Mariposa” (The Butterfly), was one of them.
